This guide is designed to assist general practice staff in making treatment and referral decisions and prioritising patient appointments. The tool is driven by the patient's stated primary presenting symptom. It is important wherever possible to speak directly to the patient or carer (with the patient present) where possible.

The process of triage, whether face-to-face or via telephone, is a process that requires specialised skills that require training and experience. This guide does not therefore replaced the need for triage training but provides a guide to assist in making decisions. As each practice has its own set of circumstances, local protocols and patient and GP profile, it is important that all practice personnel are trained appropriately and are familiar with the content and workings of this guide.
